This was so great to read! When my grandmother lived with us near the end of her life, my mom sacrificed so much to take care of her and, as she gets older, it’s something I think about a lot. We used to drive to a local Dunkin and drink coffee and eat donuts in the parking lot after work/school, just to get a mental break before going back home and relieving the nurse. Not as productive as your time exercising, but still so vital and such a formative memory for me. Thanks for writing about this!
this is very valuable: "Another part of what has helped me keep up my stamina is not being afraid to ask others for help."
i'm glad you are able to help and be helped. much love to you, your mom, and your whole family. and also everyone reading this. and everyone! (in that order?)
I love this. Thank you! I'm a nurse, and it can be so emotionally exhausting...and that probably doesn't compare to taking care of a family member. I am terrible at prioritizing my own self-care, so thank you for this. My parents are both getting older, and I need to start taking care of me if I want to be a great nurse and family caretaker. Thanks again!
Thanks for helping me reflect on my own little team who I can count and depend on to be there when I most need them. This article was so thoughtful because it helped me (a glutton for self punishment in the form of saying no to help) how to understand that caring for others during times of need really does take a village and those in your village will certainly be okay with taking turns with tasks to ensure everyone in the village is taken care of. So thanks! Wishing your mom well and a speedy recovery.
I hope your mother finds out what is wrong soon and recovers. Sending best wishes to her and all who are caring for her. 🫶🏻 What a brilliant and important piece. 🤩
You’re an incredible daughter and helper and it’s so true— you gotta look out for number one, especially when care giving. Sending love to your family and hoping you all get some answers soon.

Sometimes one must take care of ourselves before we can effectively take care of others.
